A powerful manor transformed into a refined Renaissance court, home to a large museum and monumental complex overlooking the largest green area of the city centre, the Castello Sforzesco is an unmistakable reference point for history and art in Milan.
The Castello Sforzesco is a vast brick quadrilateral, divided inside into three courtyards, rebuilt from 1450 on the area of a previous defensive building at the behest of Duke Francesco Sforza, founder of the dynasty. During the second half of the fifteenth century it quickly took on the appearance that characterizes it, with the involvement of the best architects and artists present in Milan.
After the magnificence of construction and decoration, however, the castle has known centuries of decline: transformed into a barracks, amidst collapses and degradation it risked being completely demolished. Only at the end of the 19th century was it radically restored, restoring what remained of the ancient structures and adapting the entire building for cultural purposes. The Castle hosts the Civic Museums, important libraries, graphic and photographic collections.
