The Teatro alla Scala was built on the ashes of the Teatro Ducale in 1776 at the behest of Empress Maria Teresa of Austria, and inaugurated in 1778 with Europa recognized by Antonio Salieri. The name derives from the place where the theatre was built, on a project by the neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini: the site of the church of Santa Maria alla Scala.
