San Martino in Nosiggia Church

A ghost church

The Church of San Martino in Nosiggia was demolished in 1787 and was located in the area now known as Piazza Belgioioso.

From documents dating back to the 7th century and a reference in a provincial council meeting of 1119, we know that it had a longitudinal plan divided into three naves and four altars, with frescoed rooms. It had a low ceiling and rather narrow naves, except for the high altar, which was renovated with a marble balustrade. Above the entrance was a fresco of the church’s patron saint giving half of his robe to a beggar.

Pope Pius IV is said to have been baptised inside the church.
