A story passed down from generation to generation
Augusto Caraceni was born in Ortona (CH) in 1893 and from a young age, together with his brothers, he learned the art of tailoring from his father Tommaso, who had a tailor’s shop in the village but was known throughout the region. When his older brother, Domenico, opened his own tailor’s shop in Rome, he called on two of his brothers to work with him: Galliano and Augusto, and it was here that Augusto gained a wealth of experience.
In the 1930s, Augusto moved to Paris, where he enjoyed great success as a tailor, with clients who were among the most prominent figures of the time.
In 1939, due to the outbreak of World War II, Augusto, who had since married and had four children, returned to Italy.
In 1946, he opened his own tailor’s shop with a partner at Via Fatebenefratelli 16 in Milan.
In the same year, his young son Mario began working there and learning the art of tailoring. In 1972, after Augusto’s death, Mario named the tailor’s shop in memory of his father, and thus the current name A. CARACENI was born.
From 1972 to 1998, the business continued to thrive and acquire an international clientele, thanks to Mario’s determination and commitment to maintaining the tradition. Mario received various awards, including the Sant’Omobono and the Unione Milanese Sarti.
In 1998, Mario retired, leaving the company to his daughter Rita Maria and son-in-law Carlo Andreacchio, who had already been working with him for 20 years, Carlo as a cutter and Rita Maria as an administrator.
Carlo has been a member of the Accademia dei Sartori (Tailors’ Academy) since 1997 and in 2002 he received the gold medal from the Unione Milanese Sarti (Milanese Tailors’ Union).
Since 2004, their children, Massimiliano and Valentina, have also been working alongside them, having been fascinated by the work since childhood, continuing the family tradition and preparing to take over when the time comes!
