In these artworks, the artist takes a perfectly conceived structure and reworks it in his own image, revolutionising the arch’s ancient and previously unchallenged connotations. Representations that historically celebrate strength and triumph are transformed into amorphous archaeological rejects, simultaneously iconic yet neglected.

Dream under construction. Jota
Via Goito, 7
The Mimmo Scognamiglio gallery presents Dream under construction the first Italian solo exhibition of Johny Alexandre Gomes, known as Jota. A central theme of his works is the confrontation with the mistrustful gaze of Brazil’s white community, which Jota experiences as a young black artist growing up in the favelas.
This perspective gives rise to the irony of works such as the Chapadão scenario painted on a skateboard, a sport perceived in his community as a hobby for the well-to-do. Sacredness and spirituality blend with everyday life in his works, enriched by unusual techniques learnt during his work as a bricklayer and inspired by community experiences.
