From Palazzo Reale to Brera, from outlying neighbourhoods to BAM: AriAnteo, Anteo nella Città and Fuoricinema transform Milan into a giant open-air screen

With the arrival of summer, Milan is once again preparing to experience the magic of open-air cinema thanks to Anteo’s expansive programme. Three distinct strands — AriAnteo, Anteo nella Città and Fuoricinema — make up a rich calendar that from 1st June through to September will fill the city’s squares, courtyards and parks with the very best of European and international cinema.

The 37th edition of AriAnteo is the beating heart of Milan’s cinematic summer: four venues — Palazzo Reale, Fabbrica del Vapore, Incoronata and CityLife — will host a programme ranging from premieres to titles awarded at the Oscars and the world’s leading film festivals. Among the most anticipated releases are the sequel Minions & Monsters, Steven Spielberg’s new science-fiction film Disclosure Day starring Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor, and KÖLN 75 by Ido Fluk, inspired by the legendary story of Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert. The season’s prize-winners will also return to the big screen, alongside restored cult classics and family titles such as The Devil Wears Prada 2.

In parallel, Anteo nella Città reaches its sixth edition: the travelling cinema loads up a van with a projector, 200 chairs and a large screen to bring quality films to every borough of Milan, including those furthest from traditional cultural circuits. Ticket prices are kept deliberately affordable, and audio transmitted through headsets allows screenings to take place without disturbing passers-by. The journey begins on 23rd June at the Cooperativa Labriola in Municipio 8, before making its way across the entire city through to September.

Closing the season will be Fuoricinema, now in its eleventh edition: from 11th to 13th September, BAM – Biblioteca degli Alberi and IBM Studios Milano will host three days of screenings, talks, live music and encounters with artists and authors, featuring previews straight from the Venice Film Festival. A festival conceived by Cristiana Mainardi and Cristiana Capotondi that has attracted over 100,000 attendees across its eleven editions.

The entire summer is organised with the support of BPER, in collaboration with the City of Milan’s Department of Culture as part of the Milano è Viva programme, and with Corriere della Sera.

Brera and beyond: the heart of the Anteo summer

The Brera neighbourhood and its surrounding areas become a true cinema hub this summer, with three events spanning the entire season — from open-air arena screenings through to the grand September festival.

AriAnteo Incoronata (11th June – 30th August) is the venue most deeply rooted in the district’s historic fabric. Nestled amongst the buildings of one of Milan’s most elegant streets, the arena is this year the setting for two highly anticipated special events. On 9th July, an extraordinary evening will see a screening of Primavera by Damiano Michieletto accompanied by a live performance from the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano: cinema and music merge into an event that transforms the arena into an open-air concert hall. On 13th July, a special screening of Oliver Stone’s The Doors will take audiences on a journey through the psychedelic rock of the 1960s — the perfect way to spend a summer evening. Throughout the rest of the season, the programme follows AriAnteo’s rich calendar of auteur films, premieres and festival titles.

A short distance away, in the medieval heart of the city, Piazza dei Mercanti plays host to Anteo nella Città from 8th to 19th July. One of Milan’s most evocative locations — enclosed by ancient loggias and separated from the bustle of Piazza Duomo by an unexpected hush — is transformed for twelve evenings into an open-air cinema accessible to all, with tickets at just 5 euros. The stop also carries symbolic weight: it was here in 2023 that the collaboration between Anteo and BPER was born, with the arena Le Sere dei Mercanti, now folded into the travelling project. A bond that the city has made its own and that this year is renewed with even greater force.

Finally, in September, it falls to BAM – Biblioteca degli Alberi to bring the season to a magnificent close, hosting Fuoricinema from 11th to 13th September alongside IBM Studios Milano. The Porta Nuova park, with its open gardens and long-standing dedication to accessible culture, is the ideal setting for a festival that has always championed inclusivity and collective participation. Three days of fresh-from-Venice film previews, talks with directors and actors, live music and moments of celebration: a season finale that transforms the urban greenery of Brera into an open meeting place for the whole city, free of barriers and free of entrance fees for the talks.
