Until 13 September 2024, the Galleria Fumagalli<\/a><\/strong> in Milan hosts BLACK FLAME<\/strong>, the first solo exhibition in Italy by artist Sang A Han<\/strong> (Seoul, South Korea, 1987). Exclusively represented by the gallery since 2023, Sang A Han brings her innovative selection of sculptures, created specifically for this occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sang A Han reinterprets the oriental technique of ink painting using Meok (Chinese ink) on sculptures made of sewn, padded, and painted cotton fabric. The works combine the tradition of sewing and embroidery, historically linked to domestic female labour and oriental art, with a contemporary and personal creative approach.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The title BLACK FLAME evokes the warm and undefined shades of the black Meok, similar to a rising flame. Curator Maria Vittoria Baravelli describes embroidery as an “ancient keeper of memory,” capable of narrating silent and intimate stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sang A Han creates a unique artistic language<\/strong>, merging traditional oriental painting and ancient Korean textile art with contemporary techniques. Her soft sculptures, created with brush, needle, thread, and cotton fabric, evoke nature, body, and dreams. Through these materials, the artist weaves her experiences as a woman, artist, and mother, creating works charged with magical lyricism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The way the ink filters and spreads through the cotton fabric represents how my body transforms experiences into memories,” explains Sang A Han. “My work begins with memories, not those that immediately imprint on the mind, but the sensations that slowly penetrate the fibres of my body.”<\/em><\/p>\nSang A Han<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Sang A Han reinterpreta la tecnica orientale della pittura a inchiostro usando il Meok (inchiostro di china) su sculture in tessuto di cotone cucito, imbottito e dipinto. Il titolo BLACK FLAME evoca le sfumature calde e indefinite del nero del Meok, simili a una fiamma che si innalza. La curatrice Maria Vittoria Baravelli descrive il ricamo come \"antico custode della memoria\", capace di narrare storie silenziose e intime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sang A Han crea un linguaggio artistico unico<\/strong>, unendo la pittura orientale tradizionale e l'antica arte tessitoria coreana con tecniche attuali.
