Designing a Safer Apartment: A Practical Guide to Choosing and Placing Home Security Devices

Home is where you’re meant to feel safe, and protecting it well, device by device, detail by detail, is the first real way of caring for it.

Protecting an apartment well is not just a matter of buying a security system — it is a matter of understanding which devices belong where, and why. A motion detector placed in the wrong corner covers half the room it should. A door sensor installed on the wrong surface misses the opening it is meant to detect. Getting the placement right is as important as getting the products right.

This guide walks through an apartment room by room, with specific device recommendations and placement logic for each zone, using the Ajax Systems ecosystem as the reference — a wireless platform designed to cover every layer of home protection without cabling or structural modification.

The Starting Point: Hub 2 Plus

Before any sensor is chosen, the Hub needs a home. The Hub 2 Plus is the central control panel that connects all devices, manages alerts, and maintains simultaneous communication over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and two cellular channels — so a broadband outage does not disable the system.

Place it in a central, discreet location: a hallway cupboard, a utility shelf, or a high point on an interior wall. It should be away from the front door (to avoid easy access by intruders) but close enough to the apartment’s centre to maintain strong signal reach to all sensors. It runs on a built-in backup battery for up to 15 hours and manages up to 200 connected devices.

Front Door: DoorProtect

The front door is the entry point that matters most. The DoorProtect Jeweller is a magnetic opening detector that mounts on the door frame with adhesive or two small screws — no drilling into the door structure. It detects the moment the door opens beyond 2 cm and sends an alert to the hub in under a second.

Mount the sensor body on the fixed frame, not the moving door, with the magnet on the door itself. For doors with metal frames, use the included spacer to avoid interference. The same device works equally well on balcony doors and service entrances. Battery life reaches up to 7 years.

Windows: DoorProtect + GlassProtect

Windows require two types of coverage. DoorProtect handles the opening — place one on each accessible window, particularly ground floor and those reachable from balconies or fire escapes. For added coverage, GlassProtect Jeweller detects the sound of breaking glass using a dual-tone algorithm that distinguishes genuine glass breakage from background noise.

Mount GlassProtect on the ceiling or wall within 9 metres of the window it covers, angled toward the glass. One device can cover multiple windows in the same room.

Living Room and Hallway: MotionCam

For interior coverage, the MotionCam Jeweller is the key device. It detects motion at up to 12 metres, ignores pets under 20 kg, and — crucially — takes a series of photos the moment it triggers, sending them to the Ajax app within seconds. This visual verification allows you to confirm whether an alert is a genuine intrusion or a false trigger before deciding how to respond.

Mount it in the upper corner of the room, angled to cover the main entry path into the space. In a hallway, position it at one end facing the length of the corridor. Avoid placing it facing windows, as daylight changes can affect sensitivity.

Kitchen: LeakProtect

The kitchen is the room most likely to produce water damage. The LeakProtect sensor lies flat on the floor — no mounting required — and triggers the moment moisture reaches its contacts. Place one under the kitchen sink, one near the dishwasher connection, and one beside the washing machine if it is located in the kitchen.

Each sensor communicates wirelessly with the Hub and generates the same immediate alert as any intrusion sensor. Battery life is up to 5 years, and the sensor profile is low enough to sit invisibly beneath cupboards.

Ceiling: FireProtect Plus

The FireProtect Plus detects smoke, heat rise, and carbon monoxide simultaneously. Mount it on the ceiling in the hallway — the position that gives the earliest warning for fires starting anywhere in the apartment — and in the kitchen if cooking fumes are a concern (in which case, use the heat-only mode to avoid false alarms from steam).

It connects to the same Hub and app as every other device, so a fire alert at 3am reaches your phone with the same immediacy as a door opening.

The Complete Setup

A well-equipped apartment using this layout — Hub 2 Plus, DoorProtect on the front door and key windows, GlassProtect in the living room, MotionCam in the hallway, LeakProtect in the kitchen, FireProtect Plus on the ceiling — provides layered coverage across every significant risk category: intrusion, fire, and flooding.

Everything installs without cabling. Everything is managed from one app. And the placement logic above ensures that each device covers the zone it is actually needed for, rather than simply being placed where it is convenient.

Security works when the details are right. This is what the details look like.
