Brera Design Week 2024: an unprecedented success

The 15th edition of Design Week in the Brera district has come to an end, with great satisfaction from companies, professionals and the public.

228 events taking part in our official circuit: Milan’s historic district is confirmed as the leading area for design events, transforming the city into an open-air museum.

The 15th edition of Brera Design Week has come to an end. It is a valuable and now crucial moment for companies, designers and professionals to reflect on the challenges of contemporaneity through projects that aim to shape new aesthetics, new ways of living and new models for imagining the future.

Brera is confirmed as the district par excellence, the most coveted by the design industry, as well as the most visited and appreciated by professionals and design lovers. The more than 280 events in the Brera area demonstrate the attention that companies pay to the district, which is also confirmed by a 60% increase in the number of users of the website dedicated to the Brera Design Week.

That the Brera Design District has once again proved to be the most important stage for design on an international level is also demonstrated by the numbers of this edition: 228 events taking part in the network (+8% compared to 2023) with the participation of more than 500 companies, designers and 124 permanent showrooms among the 197 present in the district. Numbers that contribute significantly to reconfirming Milan as world design capital.

The theme Materia Natura of Fuorisalone 2024, which was also embraced by the Brera district, was an interpretative key for many of the events that took place within the district, whose reflections were translated into majestic installations, investigations into innovative materials, urban forests, and moments of domestic conviviality.

The 2024 edition was devoted to getting together, among large playful installations and spaces to be shared, comfortable places that invited people to open up and enjoy collective moments, as well as an opportunity to access and discover the beauty of unexpected locations, letting oneself be transported through the streets of the district, pedestrianised for the occasion with the aim of optimising their use: Via Palermo, Largo Treves and part of Via Solferino. Among the special places made accessible during Brera Design Week were the Sala dei Pilastri in the Castello Sforzesco with Stark and his multi-sensory exploration of the states of matter; the Mediateca Santa Teresa with its impressive presentation of the mastery and peculiarities of Saudi and international design in AlUla; the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli with the futuristic work of the Ukrainian artist Aljoscha; the Istituto Lombardo with Poggenpohl who presented objects in which light, in combination with static structure, seems to defy gravity; the former Artistic Sacristy of the Carmine Church now home to the French company Saint Louis who returned to show the skill and beauty of their craftsmen’s work, the Permanente hosted KIA’s incredible installations for the second year in a row.

Fashion was also a great protagonist of the district, through important installations, exhibitions and performances: from Hermès, which as usual chose the large spaces of La Pelota to present its novelties in a continuous cross-reference between what is past and what is present; passing through Saint Laurent at the Chiostri di San Simpliciano, which presented an exceptional collection of plates originally designed by Gio Ponti in 1957 for Villa Planchart in Venezuela; Loewe at Palazzo Citterio with the 24 international artists who were finalists and winners of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize; Miu Miu at the Circolo Filologico with its first literary club aimed at supporting and fuelling the conversation on women empowerment; Melissa at the Falegnameria Cavalleroni that “gassed” the public in an immersive brand experience; Loro Piana in the Cortile della Seta with its delicate homage to the vision and work of Cini Boeri.

Among private residences, courtyards and secret gardens, Brera revealed its most evocative spaces to the city. Many visitors poured through the streets, in some cases even creating long queues to access the venues – testimony to the great success of this edition. Protagonists of this 2024 were also the glo for art installation, Interni with ENI at the Orto Botanico, Materia in Movimento immersed in the forest bathing of Grand Seiko, the site-specific installations in Porta Nuova – including Materia Natura at Fuorisalone – Porsche with The Pattern of Dreams at Palazzo Clerici, the Design Duo Double Feature by FENIX and MCM at Palazzo Cusani.
